Patrycja Ochman Do usłyszenia!

Patrycja Ochman / The Project  do usłyszenia!

The "do usłyszenia!" (See You!) project is an attempt to deepen the understanding of how the senses collaborate, particularly how the sense of touch and hearing can work together to create a fuller experience of images. Since all the senses are, in a sense, extensions of touch, it is touch that plays the integrating role, connecting all our sensory experiences into one whole. Through multisensory imagination, sight, sound, and smell become ways of touching the world, allowing for a fuller understanding and interaction with it.

In the "do usłyszenia!" project, an auditory station has been created that gives people with visual impairments the opportunity to experience images in a new way—through touch and hearing. Selected images have been subjected to graphic synthesis, resulting in key elements, such as outlines, textures, and details, being cut into stainless steel. As a result, people touching these elements can feel their shape and form, but also hear the sounds assigned to each of them.

The translation of these tactile data into audio representation makes changes in the image visible through touch: its composition, dynamics, form, and narration. In this way, through the sense of touch, blind individuals can feel the hidden narrative in the image—what is traditionally inaccessible to them through sight now becomes available through sound. For sighted people, such an experience allows a deeper engagement with the artwork—imagination is triggered, and the senses synchronize in a way that enhances the perception of the image.

The project not only expands the horizons of accessibility in art but also changes our perspective on how the senses can work together. The transformation of an image into a tactile and auditory experience evokes reactions that are not merely the results of visual perception but also involve creative interpretation processes that engage all the senses, opening the door to new, deeper artistic experiences.

The "do usłyszenia!" project was implemented with funds from the Creative Scholarship of the City of Krakow.

The objects from "do usłyszenia!" will be presented as part of the exhibition "Zbliżenie. Feliks 'Manggha' Jasieński and His Collection" at the Manggha Museum of Japanese Art and Technology, starting in February 2025, providing a wide audience with the opportunity to experience the project.
